Artists as Citizens
Tuesday 20 – Friday 23 February 2018
With over 110 speakers confirmed from over 60 different institutions across 19 different countries, the 5th international Reflective Conservatoire Conference uniquely brings together leading performers, teachers and researchers from all over the world.
The theme 'Artists as Citizens' for 2018 could not be more prescient. It will ask questions about the nature of artistic citizenship, how it is embodied in new artistic practices, what it means for organisational development and leadership, nurturing our students as artist-citizens and maintaining and enhancing quality and impact. The Reflective Conservatoire Conference will continue its tradition of creative programming with a rich mix of participatory workshops, performances, presentations and networking.
The Guildhall School of Music and Drama is delighted to announce the first two distinguished keynote speakers. In true Reflective Conservatoire style, they come from very different domains and promise to stimulate and challenge:
- Professor Geoffrey Crossick (Distinguished Professor of Humanities, SOAS) is a senior scholar who recently led the major research programme, the AHRC Cultural Value Project
- Helen Marriage (Director, Artichoke), is a pioneering artistic activist and leader
- How we understand artistic citizenship
- Empowering students, and established artists, as artist-citizens
- New professional artistic tools and practices
- Global and political perspectives, from South Africa’s townships to south east Asia
- Transformative curriculum design
- Creative and collaborative partnerships – from prisons, refugee centres, local authorities, to care-givers
- Arts in health
