The ARTEMIS Digitisation Working Group is excited to share the results of its survey. This report sheds light on students’ perspectives regarding the integration of digital technologies in their education, artistry, and audience engagement.

The Working Group collaborated with the European Performing Arts Student’s Association (EPASA) to gather direct feedback from students, ensuring their voices are central in shaping the future of digital education in music.

Conducted between May and September 2023, the online survey collected 120 responses from students across European music institutions from 20 countries. The survey aimed to gain insights into four key areas:

  • The presence of digital practices within HMEIs
  • Current digital capabilities of students
  • How students relate to new technologies in their creative work
  • The relationship between institutions and the ongoing digital transformation.

The survey showcased significant gaps in how digital technologies are integrated into music education. While students demonstrate a proactive approach to digital tools, many lack sufficient institutional support and structured training in key areas such as social media engagement, music production, and monetisation. The report also highlights a disconnect between students’ digital needs and institutional capabilities, with institutions struggling to keep pace with the digital shift.

The survey revealed after a series of questions during the interviews that, while digital technologies are beginning to play an important role in music education, there are still significant gaps in how these tools are integrated into the curriculum. Students reported that many institutions are not fully equipped to offer formal training in areas like music production, digital performance, and digital engagement with audiences—skills that are increasingly important in today’s digital music landscape.

The report also underscores the need for HMEIs to better integrate digital technologies into their curricula and foster a culture of support for both students and staff in adapting to the digital age.

The report was compiled by Sandrine Desmurs (WG Chair) and Mimi Harmer (EPASA) with the support of the AEC Office Team.
