The competition will be held for the seventh time at the Hochschule für Musik Dresden’s Pre-College. It is aimed at young cellists aged 12 to 20. The competition will be carried out in four categories. The focus of the programme is on the works of the patron Justus Johann Friedrich Dotzauer.
Dotzauer, the son of a priest, was born January 20, 1783 in Häselrieth near Hildburghausen in Thuringia/Germany. After two years of intensive study with Hepner and Kriegk (a student of Duport), he made his concert debut in Hildburghausen and thereafter found his first job in the Orchestra of Meiningen. At the age of 22 he moved to Leipzig, where he played with the Orchestra and founded a string quartet. In 1811 he joined the famous orchestra of the Hofkapelle Dresden, where he was solo cellist for 29 years until his death March 6, 1860.
As a composer, Dotzauer worked in several areas. Although most of his compositions have been forgotten, his technical studies are an important part of the cello education. No cellist before or since Dotzauer has produced so much study material. In addition, he published the six solo suites of Johann Sebastian Bach for the first time.
The results of the Competition will be determined by a renowned jury. The combined total of prize awards the winners will receive is €9.000 .
