The AEC Gender Equality and Non-Discrimination Mainstreaming Task Force has officially concluded its activities within the AEC–Empowering Artists as Makers in Society (ARTEMIS). A key focus of their work has been the Safe & Brave Space sessions, which have taken place at all AEC events since 2023.
Launched in 2023, these confidential discussion groups were designed to create safe spaces for in-person participants to share feedback on AEC events. The sessions emphasised topics such as diversity, inclusion, gender equality, and non-discrimination, while also inviting participants to reflect on their experiences at their home institutions.
A safe space, in this context, refers to an environment where individuals feel secure from discrimination, harassment, or criticism. It is intended to foster dialogue free from bias, conflict, or potentially harmful interactions, creating a setting where participants feel empowered to voice their perspectives.
The feedback collected through these sessions has been instrumental for the AEC in developing proactive measures to promote positive change in higher music education institutions (HMEIs). The sessions have consistently underscored the importance of open discussions on power dynamics, discrimination, and inclusion within the sector.
As part of its final efforts, the Task Force has compiled the most frequently raised topics from the Safe & Brave Space sessions, while maintaining full confidentiality for all participants. This summary, available below, provides valuable insights to guide continued progress in these critical areas.
