Singers Wanted! Designing Voices for Our Lives project

In 2025, the next World Expo will take place in Osaka, under the theme: “Designing Future Society for Our Lives.”

As discussed in AEC’s recent ARTEMIS Project, one of our key objectives is to support students in becoming artists and makers who will shape society.

With this vision in mind, AEC’s member institution Mozarteum University Salzburg has approached the Republic of Austria with a proposal to organise a special choir comprised of students from AEC member institutions, to perform a unique concert: The Power of Young Voices to Create a Better Future.

The Republic of Austria Pavilion has agreed to host this performance, and we have been invited to present the concert on Austria’s National Day at the Expo, on May 23rd, in the National Hall on the Expo grounds in Osaka.

This is a fantastic opportunity to increase the visibility of the AEC and bring our students together to engage with Expo 2025.

A Concert for Hope and the Future

The choir performance will take place on Austria’s National Day, May 23, 2025, in the National Day Hall on the EXPO grounds in Osaka.

This project, initiated by Prof. Elisabeth Gutjahr, Rector of Mozarteum University Salzburg and Vice President of the AEC, aligns with the institution’s commitment to nurturing young artists as transformative contributors to society. Under the artistic direction of Prof. Jörn Andresen, the concert will feature a vibrant, multilingual a cappella program that explores the themes of voice, music, and hope.

Why Voices?

The voice is not only the foundation of all communication but also a profound medium of artistic and emotional expression. In this project, the students will explore the transformation of thought and spoken word into song, reflecting on how melody and rhythm—the two pillars of music—give form to our emotions and aspirations.

The program will address critical global challenges, such as climate change, AI, authoritarianism, and armed conflicts, by asking: How can music give voice to our hopes? What musical languages and perspectives can inspire a brighter future?

Call for Participants

The AEC invites its member institutions to send students to participate in this extraordinary project. One student from each member institution will join a choir of young voices from across Europe and beyond. The details are as follows:

  • Rehearsal Phase: May 11–23, 2025, in Osaka
  • Performance Date: May 23, 2025
  • Participants: Students studying Voice, Choral Conducting, Church Music, Music Education, or related fields
  • Requirements: Choral experience, vocal training, enthusiasm, and the ability to prepare independently

Each participating institution can nominate four students (one soprano, one alto, one tenor, and one bass). Applications must be submitted collectively by institutions to Mozarteum University Salzburg at designing.voices@moz.ac.at.

The application requirements and documents can be found here.

A Vision for Unity Through Music

By uniting voices from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds, Designing Voices for Our Lives seeks to demonstrate the power of collaboration, creativity, and hope. This initiative represents not only an artistic endeavour but also a statement about the importance of community and collective effort in shaping the future.

For the AEC, this is an unparalleled opportunity to showcase the talent, passion, and dedication of its students on a world stage. Together, these young artists will bring their voices—and their visions—to Osaka, amplifying the message of hope and resilience for a better tomorrow.
