The University of Music and Performing Arts Graz celebrates anniversary

The university was founded in 1816 and therefore it is the oldest music university in Austria, the land of music. The theme of our anniversary is “200 Years Presence of Art”. The academic year 2016/17 is also going to be a founding period for a number of new projects and events, realized under the theme of “Ideas for the Future” within our seventeen institutes, two Doctoral Schools and the Centre for Gender Studies, with main focus on agendas and challenges important for the coming years.

In the academic year 2016/17 the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz celebrates its 200th anniversary. In 1816, an institutionalized form of music education was initiated with the establishment of a singing school, from which the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz has evolved. Since 1998 the university exists as it does today. Because of this genesis, many institutes are celebrating one by one their 50th anniversary: In 2017 the Institute for Aesthetics of Music and the Institute for Early Music and Performance Practice are celebrating.
