The Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln (Cologne University of Music and Dance) is one of the world’s leading performing arts schools and one of the largest music institutions for higher education in Europe with its three campuses in Cologne, Wuppertal, and Aachen. The Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln is looking to fill the position of a

W2 Professor for Artistic Research (all genders)

at the interdisciplinary Centre for Artistic Research and Digital Innovation (ZKD)

at the Cologne campus at the earliest possible date.


The professorship should have a cross-departmental and cross-location impact on all degree programs and subjects and work closely with the Professorship for Digital Innovation, which is also based at ZKD.

We are looking for an experienced and ambitious personality as an artist and researcher with a broad and diverse practice in Artistic Research as well as international standing.

Your tasks will include:

  • further development of the field of Artistic Research as an interdisciplinary cross-sectional area at the HfMT Köln in the sense of a broad, practice- and theory-based discourse as well as long-term representation of the field
  • mediation between artistic, artistic-scientific and artistic-pedagogical perspectives
  • independent research and publication activities or comparable artistic activities
  • conception, implementation and management of projects in the field of Artistic Research
  • development of innovative teaching and learning formats for Artistic Research

What we expect from you:

  • a university degree in performing arts and/or in the field of Artistic Research
  • a strong research profile (publications and research into the discourse of Artistic Research, experience in interdisciplinary research, and designing research projects)
  • proven active participation in the discourse of Artistic Research and involvement in the international specialist community, especially with a focus on music or music and dance
  • knowledge of current developments in Artistic Research at national, European and international level
  • proven educational skills acquired through relevant teaching experience at music universities or comparable institutions
  • strong teamwork and networking skills at the interface between art and science as well as the willingness to collaborate across disciplines and degree programs
  • ability to integrate the field of research into the university and to convey it to different target groups and to provide subject orientations
  • willingness to actively participate in student assessments and the bodies of academic self-administration, as well as the development of study programs and teaching models
  • attendance at the university on a regular basis
  • German language skills or willingness to learn German within two years
  • Good command of English

Advantageous:

  • A PhD/doctorate in a relevant academic discipline or in Artistic Research
  • experience with applications and fundraising for national, EU and international research projects as well as willingness to implement such projects
  • experience with developing Artistic Research teaching formats, as well as professionalization concepts at music and/or dance universities
Additional documents to be submitted

  • a concept paper on the further development of artistic research at the HfMT Köln (max. 2 pages)

Employment requirements are based on Section 29 of the Act on Universities of Art of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia (Kunst HG NRW). The employment will be within the framework of a private-law employment relationship and will initially be limited to two years.
