Dear Colleagues and Members of the AEC Community,

As we release this statement, the world is witnessing an escalating humanitarian crisis in the Middle East.

We are deeply moved by the global wave of student protests and intensified public debate over the ongoing conflict, human rights violations, and the rising toll on civilian lives.

In this context, the Association Européenne des Conservatoires, Académies de Musique et Musikhochschulen (AEC) feels compelled to address the critical role that music, education, and the arts play in these times of turmoil.

With this statement, we join the growing global chorus of voices calling for a prompt resolution of the ceasefire negotiations and the restoration of peace to a region torn apart by violence and division. We reaffirm our belief in the power of music and the arts to transcend borders and build bridges of understanding and reconciliation, even in the most challenging circumstances.

“The AEC strongly condemns the violations of human rights and international law in Palestine and Israel that are conveyed by the UN and international aid organisations. We join calls for the ongoing ceasefire negotiations to be concluded immediately with an agreement that prevents further escalation of the conflict, stops hostilities and alleviates the humanitarian crisis that threatens the whole region.

AEC unconditionally stands with universal rights such as freedom of expression, artistic and academic freedom, and the right to assemble in peaceful demonstration and protest. These rights must be upheld without exception, and the AEC fully supports all efforts, statements and declarations aimed at safeguarding them.

Music and the arts cannot thrive without freedom and when exercised, that freedom holds great power to foster understanding and reconciliation. AEC calls on all students, staff and leaders to engage in dialogue to strengthen artistic communities and international exchange regardless of borders, race and religious background.”
