HarMA HUB is a three-year Cooperation partnership in higher education (Erasmus+ programme – KA220) led by the Conservatoire royal de Bruxelles and funded by the European Union. The project, targeting teachers, students and researchers in music theory, builds up on the outcomes developed within the first edition (HarMA+, 2020-2023) by gathering music theory resources in an online open platform, fostering research and pedagogical innovation, and striving for a certain level of harmonisation of the academic offer at European level.
The project focuses on the exchange of practices in music theory education through digital tools and as part of the project, a HarMA HUB platform of resources has been developed and recently launched. It includes:
Glossary
A multilingual glossary of common music theory terms, often illustrated with musical examples (scores and/or audio), designed to support teaching and learning.
Bibliography
An online bibliography of textbooks, companions, practice materials, journal articles, etc., used for teaching various music theory subjects at HMEIs in Europe. The bibliography allows a multi-faceted search for items that are not only useful in everyday practice but can constitute a database of resources for music theory disciplines, specific categories, etc.
This innovative tool is created by the users themselves – teachers and students – who can submit specific items used in their institutions, see more here.
HarMAnalysis
HarMAnalysis Repository collection of Analytical Case Studies on musical works, compositional techniques, and style elements. The papers are intended for sharing with music analysis professors in their teaching practice, for use by their students, and for contributing to research in the music theory field. Submissions are double-blind peer-reviewed, assigned digital identifiers (DOI, ORCID, e-ISSN), and published open-access on the HarMA HUB. To submit a case study, see the conditions here.
HarMArchive: Pedagogically Inspired Music Theories
The HarMArchive for Pedagogically Inspired Music Theories seeks to bridge the gap between music theory as research and as pedagogy. While researchers often produce highly specialized work, music theory in higher education is frequently taught by musicians whose main field is not theory, making it difficult to apply the latest scientific insights in teaching.
HarMArchive addresses this by encouraging original approaches where pedagogical applicability is central and pedagogical applications of existing theories made accessible to students and teachers.
Its aim is to ensure that theories not only advance research but also remain vital within broader musical culture. The Archive welcomes contributions from all traditional areas of theory (harmony, counterpoint, analysis, ear training, solfeggio) as well as innovative and unconventional approaches.
