The European Platform for Artistic Research in Music (EPARM) Conference 2018 took place at the Escola Superior de Música e Artes do Espetáculo (ESMAE) in Porto from the 22nd to the 24th of March under the title “Playing” as a common ground for artistic research and teaching arts – reflection, knowledge and knowledge transfer. This year the EPARM Conference brought together a great number of music researchers, educators and/or performers from all over Europe into a three days exploration of the bonds between artistic research and teaching.
The topic was approached from many angles and the lectures related both to how artistic research results can be used in teaching and how pedagogical practice can be incorporated in artistic research. The selected researchers had the opportunity to present and discuss their work during the two keynote sessions, the 24 parallel sessions and a round table discussion.
In particular, the two keynote presentations “Knowledge in Motion. On Aesthetic and Other Ways of Thinking” by Ursula Brandstätter (Head of University in Linz, Austria) and “Improving musical play through research – academic and non-academic approaches” by Gustavo Costa (from Sonoscopia, Portugal) illustrated how “the playing of music” can be considered a common ground between teaching and research, putting artistic practice at the centre of the activity and becoming an example of good practice.
More information on the event, all the abstracts and biographies of the speakers as well as the presentations of the keynote speakers can be found at www.aec-music.eu/eparm2018.
The next EPARM Conference will take place at the Gheorghe Dima Music Academy in Cluj-Napoca, Romania, from the 28th to the 30th of March 2019.
