The Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre hosted the HarMa HUB Transnational Project Meeting on October 24-25, 2024, bringing together educators and experts from across Europe to discuss key advancements in music theory pedagogy and collaborative projects aimed at improving the HarmaHub platform.
Transnational Project Meeting
The event kicked off with a warm welcome from Kerri Kotta, followed by a presentation by Máté Balogh, who offered feedback and insights from the intensive training week for students held earlier in April in Budapest. Vicent Sanchis had the opportunity to present the upcoming HarMA Seminar Event, scheduled for April 2025 in Valencia, which will be a crucial next step in the collaborative efforts of the project partners. In the afternoon, participants delved into practical aspects of the HarmaHub website, discussing its development and setting the agenda for further discussions the following day. These topics included bibliographies, glossaries, and resources such as the Journal of Music Theory Pedagogy, as well as an upcoming HarMa Week for partner staff.
On day two, discussions continued on the HarMa HUB platform, focusing on its technical development, data transfer from the old HarMa+ platform, and search engine issues. Participants also provided feedback and chose a name for a new music theory journal. The meeting concluded with a guided tour of the Estonian Academy, led by Vice Rector Henry David Varema, followed by visits to the Kadriorg and KUMU Art Museums.
HarMA Seminar 2025
The 4th Edition of HarMA – Harmony and Music Analysis – Seminar Event will take place in Conservatori Superior de Música Joaquín Rodrigo in Valencia (Spain) on 14 – 16 April 2025. The goal of the International HarMA Seminar Event is to bring in a single place the Music Theory faculties from Higher Music Education Institutions to talk about their Home Institutions’ organization and especially to share their teaching practice experiences, international projects and innovative teaching methods in these fields.
There will be three days of sharing experiences, as well as lectures, training sessions, a dedicated and contributive comparative analysis training session, a catered lunch and networking. Cultural activities, visits, roundtable discussions and sightseeing city tours will be organized for the participants as well.
What is HarMA?
HarMA HUB is a three-year cooperation partnership project funded by the European Union and coordinated by Conservatoire royal de Bruxelles. The project, targeting teachers, students and researchers in music theory, will build up on the outcomes developed within the first edition (HarMA+, 2020-2023) by gathering music theory resources in an online open platform, fostering research and pedagogical innovation, and striving for a certain level of harmonisation of the academic offer at European level.
Overall, the main objective of HarMA HUB is to bring together the community of music theory within Higher Music Education institutions at the European level, with the purpose of modernising practices and giving access to the latest knowledge and innovations in this specific field. In the long term, the project will allow a common reflection on the place of music theory as part of the training of future musicians.
