On 12 and 13 May, the “Reflect & React” conference on Artistic Research (AR) as part of higher music education took place at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Köln.

Artistic research (AR) is no longer a brand new phenomenon, but one that has arrived at very different speeds in the different various countries and these countries’ higher music education institutions (HMEI). So far, the European AR landscape has also been quite heterogeneous with regard to the issue of how students should be introduced to the subject during their studies..

The symposium was also remarkable because it brought together two Erasmus+ Strategic Partnership projects that both started three years ago addressing very similar questions: How can AR empower performing musicians to become better artists, and how can HMEIs facilitate this process.

A report of this symposium is now available, summarising some key elements, also for those who did not have the opportunity to come to Cologne.
