SIMM is an international network of researchers and organisations that examines the social impact of music-making across a wide range of cultural contexts.

The planning for 2024/2025 includes the following events: 

9th International SIMM-posium

A Symposium in collaboration with Copenhagen based Rhythmic Music Conservatory, in which research papers from all over the world will be presented, with special emphasis on Scandinavian papers. 

Building on the previous SIMM-posia in Ghent, London, Porto, Bogota, Brussels, Paris, London and Brisbane, the 2024 Copenhagen SIMM-posium features presentations, thematic panels and keynotes, exploring the social impact of participatory music-making across a wide range of cultural contexts.

Delegates are warmly encouraged to join in person in Copenhagen, even though online presentations will also be accommodated where necessary, and the event will be live-streamed.

This event will be held from 05 – 07 November 2024, registration is necessary to be able to attend. You can find the preliminary programme here.

9th SIMM Research Seminar

This event focuses on research on the role of composers and music composition in social and community projects and programmes. It will be held from 09 – 11 May in Cologne with the collaboration of Ensemble MusikFabrik, the Hochschule für Musik und Danz Köln and Chair Jonet.

10th SIMM Research Seminar

For scholars developing research on the practice of participatory opera and music theatre, this event will be organised in the Hochschule Darmstadt (in collaboration with the Darmstadt Summer Course for New Music, Guildhall School of Music, and Chair Jonet).

10th SIMM-posium

Presented by Professor Lee Higgins, Director of the International Centre for Community Music, York St John University. The 10th SIMM-posium will be hosted by the academic Chair Jonet of the University of Ghent from 24-26.11.2025.
