On December 9, 2025, the MUSIC4D Orchestra made a landmark international debut at New York’s Carnegie Hall with the event From Morricone to Bacalov: The Music of Southern Italian Cinema. Under the baton of conductor Michelangelo Galeati, the performance brought together a talented orchestra of young musicians from a network of Sicilian and Sardinian conservatories. The program reimagined iconic soundtracks from films such as Il Gattopardo, Nuovo Cinema Paradiso, The Postman, Malèna, and Baarìa, featuring exclusive arrangements and orchestrations by pianist Giuseppe Vasapolli.
The program reimagined iconic soundtracks from films such as Il Gattopardo, Nuovo Cinema Paradiso, The Postman, Malèna, and Baarìa, featuring exclusive arrangements and orchestrations by pianist Giuseppe Vasapolli. This immersive experience transcended a traditional recital by integrating synchronized video projections and custom film sequences, leading the audience on a profound sensory journey through the cinematic heritage of Southern Italy.
This event marked a pivotal milestone for MUSIC4D, a forward-thinking initiative funded by Italy’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) and coordinated by the Conservatorio Alessandro Scarlatti of Palermo.
The New York performance also hosted a groundbreaking research pilot led by Prof. Riccardo Sarti (Conservatorio di Sassari), Prof. Francesco Pupo (Università della Calabria), and Prof. Valeria Seidita (Università di Palermo). This study utilized specialized wearable devices to monitor the emotional responses of the conductor, the musicians, and the audience in real time. This research aims to analyze emotional data through machine learning and integrate these findings with robotics to explore new frontiers in sensitive, adaptive performance and human-machine interaction in the arts.
