Artistic research (AR) has now become an established part of the European landscape of higher music education. However, this development has so far been insufficiently reflected in the curricula of most music study programmes. The ARE initiative (the acronym standing for Artistic Research Education), which emerged from the two Erasmus+ projects RAPP Lab and REACT, has played a significant role in bringing about a gradual change in this trend.

Last spring, a webinar entitled ‘Curriculum Development in Artistic Research’ and a panel discussion on the topic at the EPARM meeting 2025 were very well received. The AEC newsletter reported on this in its edition from April 2025.

We are now pleased to announce that these successful activities will be followed up. Two webinars are scheduled for October 2025 and January 2026, but these should only be the beginning of a longer series.

The upcoming webinars are aimed, on the one hand, at researchers, teachers, supervisors and students who are already active and experienced in the field, but on the other hand also at those who want to know more about Artistic Research, but were so far afraid to ask. You are warmly welcome to register for the first of these two webinars now. Participation is free of charge.

Upcoming Webinar

14 October 2025, 15:00 – 17:00 CEST

How to support teaching staff members to supervise AR projects, in particular, people with a background in musicology and performance?

Presented and facilitated by Stephen Broad, Director of Research and Engagement at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland – Glasgow, currently visiting professor at McGill University Montreal (Canada) and Chair of the AEC EPARM working group

More and more Masters and Doctoral students in Higher Music Education are pursuing Artistic Research projects, but there are still few opportunities for systematic exchange of supervisory experience and sharing advice on how Artistic Research projects can be guided and supervised

This 2-hour webinar is intended for those who are new to the supervision of Artistic Research. You may be an experienced Artistic Researcher taking your first steps in supervision; or a teacher and professional practitioner called upon to offer support to Artistic Research students; or an experienced research supervisor in another research domain, such as musicology or performance science, tasked with supervising students in Artistic Research.

In the webinar, we will explore together some of the fundamentals of Artistic Research supervision, consider the processes of supervision, and highlight some of the resources that are available to support us as supervisors. Through a mixture of presentations, plenaries, group work and Q&A, we’ll share experiences and, recognising the reality that many of us are called upon to supervise projects that lie outside our established areas of specialism, we’ll pay particular attention to supporting students when we don’t feel like experts ourselves.

Teaching Artistic Research in Cross- and Transdisciplinary Settings

Gilvano Dalagna and Jorge Salgado Correia – University of Aveiro / INET-md

This seminar addresses epistemological and methodological issues and examines the particular challenges that students, teachers, supervisors, and institutions face when crossing disciplinary boundaries. Based on practical case studies, participants will reflect on questions of knowledge generation, project design, and evaluation both in plenary sessions and in small groups.
