University Professorship (f/m/d) for Head of Large Ensembles-Jazz

INSTITUTE JAZZ

YOUR DUTIES

• Teaching the courses “Big Band” (KUG Jazz Orchestra), “Stage Band”, “Nine Piece Band”, “Ensemble Conducting Jazz”

   o Directing a Big Band (KUG Jazz Orchestra) with a focus on teaching and performing a diverse program centered on high-level contemporary Big Band repertoire (e.g. Brookmeyer, Schneider, McNeely, Hollenbeck)

  o Directing a Big Band (KUG Stage Band) with a focus on teaching and performing a diverse program primarily from the traditional Big Band repertoire (in particular Basie, Ellington, Jones, Herman)

  o Teaching the fundamentals of section playing across all sections of the band, as well as jazz-specific phrasing

  o Demonstrating the historical and cultural significance of the repertoire performed by each Big Band

• Responsible representation and promotion of the subject in its entirety, in particular in the development and practice of its arts-based activity and research

• Active participation in the further development of the university’s teaching environment and its artistic and scholarly life, as well as helping to shape the academic autonomy of the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz

• Participation in organisational, administrative and evaluation duties


YOURE PROFILE

• Relevant tertiary qualification from an Austrian or international institution, or equivalent artistic aptitude

• Outstanding personality with the highest artistic qualification for the position

• Outstanding competence and extensive experience in directing both large and small jazz ensembles (including section rehearsals) at various levels

• Experience in teaching Jazz Ensemble Conducting (conducting, rehearsal techniques, and organization)

• Extensive experience as a performing musician in large ensembles with professional and high artistic standards

• Musicians with an outstanding active artistic career and an instrumental focus on jazz trumpet, jazz trombone, or jazz saxophone are encouraged to apply

• Outstanding pedagogical and didactic competence

• Teaching in German and English

• Teaching experience or master classes in the tertiary sector

• Outstanding international artistic career

• Sensitivity in dealing with gender, diversity and sustainability

• If German is not the applicant’s native language, a willingness to learn German with the aim of reaching at least level B2 within a fixed period of time is assumed.

CONTRACT

• Contract according to § 99 of the Universities Act

• The employment contract is limited to 2 years in accordance with § 25 of the collective bargaining Agreement for University Staff. The appointment may only be extended after an appointment procedure has been carried out in accordance with § 98 of the Universities Act.

• Employment level: Part-time, employment level 50 % of full-time employment

• Salary: The collective agreement specifies a minimum monthly gross salary (A1 job group), currently € 3,356.65 (14x annually); a higher salary may be negotiated.
