University Professorship for the artistic subject Elementary Music Education

with likely commencement in the winter semester 2026/27 and based on § 98 of the Universities Act.

The University of Music and Performing Arts Graz – the KUG – with around 2,300 students at its campuses in Graz and Oberschützen, is an international university offering a wide range of courses in music and the performing arts. Located in the heart of Europe, we build on the cultural heritage of our region and at the same time explore and contribute to current trends in the contemporary arts. We engage with international developments in the arts, pedagogy and research, and explore the significance of art and culture in society. Teachers and students work cooperatively in this process. We are committed to fostering gender mainstreaming, diversity, and sustainability in order to transform the artistic and cultural sector, as well as to further develop our institution. The artistic Professorship of Elementary Music Education is intended to expand the profile of the Institute to include the elementary area and, in co-operation with instrumental (vocal) pedagogy, teacher training and music mediation, to create an interlinked offer of courses for working with a wide variety of target groups.

Your duties

• teaching, particularly in the subject elementary music education - artistic

• teaching and conceptual collaboration in the degree programme instrumental and vocal pedagogy

• collaboration with the degree programme music education (secondary school teacher accreditation) and the master’s study programme music and theatre mediation

• conceptual development of a new bachelor's and master's programme in elementary music education

• intensive networking with relevant institutions (such as music schools, the Johann-Joseph-Fux Conservatory, general education schools, kindergartens, adult education, other music universities)

• conceptual development of thematic priorities and fields of action in relation to music and inclusion

• conceptual development of artistic and pedagogical professional fields in the area of elementary music education

• active participation in the further development of the university’s teaching environment and its artistic and scholarly life, as well as helping to shape the academic autonomy of the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz

• participation in organisational, administrative and evaluation duties

Your profile

• relevant tertiary qualification from an Austrian or international institution or an equivalent artistic aptitude

• outstanding personality with the highest artistic qualification for the position

• outstanding pedagogical and didactic competence

• many years of professional experience in elementary music education with various age groups in school or extracurricular settings

• teaching experience at tertiary level

• sensitivity in the areas of gender, diversity and sustainability

• If German is not the applicant’s native language, a willingness to learn German with the aim of reaching at least level B2 within a fixed period of time is assumed.

A doctorate, publications in the artistic-scientific field, published concept developments and experience in artistic-pedagogical or artistic-scientific projects are desired.

Contract: Temporary employment contract in accordance with § 25 of the collective agreement for university employees for a period of 5 years with the possibility of extension for an indefinite period.

Level of employment: Full-time

Salary: The collective agreement specifies a minimum monthly gross salary, currently € 6,604.30 (14x annually); a higher salary may be negotiated.
