The METRIC Symposium will take place at the Royal Conservatoire The Hague on 26–27 February 2027.

The Symposium follows the METRIC Intensive Programme, five days of training and exchange on improvisation between teachers and students from member institutions. It is an open platform for discussion that brings in the wider improvisation community. The Symposium will focus on how Higher Music Education Institutions (HMEIs) can integrate improvisation more effectively, and how they can learn from one another’s approaches. It is addressed to improvisation teachers, practitioners, students and professionals, as well as management and administrative staff of HMEIs. Teaching staff with little experience in improvisation (e.g., teachers from classical departments) are expressly invited as well.

The Symposium will focus on how Higher Music Education Institutions (HMEIs) can integrate improvisation more effectively, and how they can learn from one another’s approaches.

About the Network:

METRIC is a collaborative network of leading European conservatoires and the European Association of Conservatoires, dedicated to advancing higher music education through international cooperation in improvisation.

By fostering continuous exchange and mutual enrichment, METRIC supports the development of teaching, performance, and research in improvisation, across all genres, from tonal and modal traditions to free improvisation.

The METRIC Network builds on two earlier initiatives: an initiative by the Royal Conservatoire The Hague (2011–2014) and an Erasmus+ Programme partnership (2015–2018) coordinated by the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre.

After 2018, the network was maintained to build on its achievements and to sustain international exchange in improvisation for students and teachers.
