General Information
The Conservatorio Statale di Musica “Pietro Mascagni” is a public institution of higher music education based in Livorno, Tuscany. Founded in 1953 as the city’s first public music school, it has developed into a centre for advanced musical training, artistic specialisation, research and performance.
The Conservatory offers first- and second-cycle academic diploma programmes in classical music and jazz, including instrumental and vocal performance, composition and music education. Foundational and preparatory courses support students as they develop the skills required for entry to higher music education.
At third-cycle level, the Conservatory offers a three-year doctoral programme in “Music, Cognitive Sciences and New Technologies: Interdisciplinary Models for Performance”, established jointly with the “Rinaldo Franci” Conservatory in Siena, with Livorno as the lead institution. Launched in the 2025/2026 academic year, the programme explores performance in its broadest sense, encompassing musical execution, composition, improvisation, teaching and new technologies. It combines artistic research with methods from neuroscience and bioengineering, addressing perception, multisensory integration, musical communication, movement and innovative performance technologies. Teaching and research involve collaboration with the Universities of Pisa and Siena, the Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies and the Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa.
Its educational approach brings together individual study, theoretical and historical knowledge, and practical music-making. Chamber music, orchestral and choral activities complement specialist training, while courses in contemporary repertoire and music technology broaden students’ artistic perspectives. Concerts and other public events connect the Conservatory’s educational work with the cultural life of Livorno and the surrounding region.
International cooperation is an integral part of the institution’s activities. Through Erasmus+, the Conservatory supports mobility and exchange and welcomes students from partner institutions, creating opportunities to share musical experience across borders.
Rooted in Livorno’s musical heritage, the Pietro Mascagni Conservatory provides a setting in which students can develop their artistic identity and prepare for professional activity in performance, composition and teaching.
