ABOUT US
The Vienna Music Institute (VMI) is an innovative higher education institution dedicated to contemporary music education. VMI has played a pioneering role in Austria and is currently the only institution offering state-accredited programs in Songwriting and Creative Musicianship. Since its founding in 1999, VMI has consistently bridged European and Anglo-American musical traditions. What began with instrumental studies has developed into a broad portfolio of programs including vocal and instrumental studies, songwiriting, composition, media composition, music pedagogy, music production, electronic music, and music business.
VMI understands musicality and creativity as fundamental human capacities that can be developed and professionalized. The institution combines rigorous knowledge transfer with practice-oriented teaching, artistic development, individual mentoring, and interdisciplinary exchange. Beyond technical skills, particular attention is given to artistic potential and creative identity. Throughout their studies—and often beyond—students are supported individually through projects, studio work, international exchange, and career development. VMI is committed to a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion, providing equal opportunities for all members of its community regardless of background, gender, sexual orientation, or personal characteristics. Diversity is understood not only as a social reality but as a key resource for artistic innovation. By bringing together diverse cultural, social, and musical perspectives, VMI fosters an inclusive environment that enables both individual development and collective creativity. Interdisciplinarity and diversity form the foundation of a dynamic, forward-looking learning environment.
