Designing Voices for Our Lives: Empowering Young Artists at WORLD EXPO OSAKA 2025

We are proud to announce Designing Voices for Our Lives, a powerful and inspiring initiative that will take center stage at the World Expo 2025 in Osaka, Japan. This project reflects the Expo’s overarching theme: “Designing Future Society for Our Lives.”

Project Overview

Spearheaded by the Mozarteum University Salzburg, a member of the Association Européenne des Conservatoires, Académies de Musique et Musikhochschulen (AEC), the initiative brings together a diverse choir of students from AEC member institutions.

These young artists will collaborate on a unique concert performance scheduled for May 23, 2025, at the Austrian Pavilion’s National Day Hall on the Expo grounds in Osaka.

In addition to the main Expo performance, the choir will present two preview concerts:

  • May 20 at Kobe College of Music
  • May 21 in Matsumoto Harmony Hall

These performances offer an extraordinary opportunity for students to engage with diverse audiences across Japan and showcase their artistic vision on an international stage.

The AEC is proud to support this initiative, which exemplifies the power of music to foster intercultural dialogue, promote peace, and strengthen mutual understanding across borders. By championing projects like this, the AEC reaffirms its commitment to using music as a means to connect people, cultures, and ideas in a world that increasingly needs unity and empathy.

Artistic Vision

The project was initiated by Prof. Elisabeth Gutjahr, Rector of Mozarteum University Salzburg and Vice President of the AEC, and is led artistically by Prof. Jörn Andresen. The choir will present a multilingual a cappella program exploring the themes of voice, music, and hope.

In response to the call of the great world EXPO 2025: "Designing Future Society for Our Lives", our project offers a vital declaration: Artists as makers in society! Music and singing emerge as powerful bridge builders, shaping a vibrant and peaceful community. Through sound, diverse languages unite and resonate deeply within us. With the generous hospitality of Kobe College, our choir is honoured to rehearse for ten days while immersing in the richness of Japanese culture. A heartfelt thank you to all who made this extraordinary journey possible: AEC goes EXPO: music matters!
- Elisabeth Gutjahr, Mozarteum Rector and AEC Vice-President

Through original compositions and curated texts, the performance will address urgent global issues: climate change, artificial intelligence, authoritarianism, and armed conflict, transforming words into musical expression. By blending rhythm and melody with personal and collective narratives, the project aims to inspire reflection and spark dialogue on the challenges and possibilities that shape our shared future.
