The AEC is pleased to introduce its latest publication, Innovating Curricula – Building Capacity for Innovation in Higher Music Education Institutions designed to inspire and support institutions starting or undergoing curriculum changes, reimagining curricula, institutional structures, and learning activities to align with the evolving identity of musicians as “makers in and of society.”

Aimed at leaders, staff, and students, the publication was put together by the ARTEMIS Capacity-Building Working Group

The Group worked as a think tank from 2022 to 2025, exploring the evolving roles, motivations, and objectives of Higher Music Education Institutions: how are institutions, through innovative curriculum design, dealing with introducing new skills, attitudes, addressing social awareness, implementing context-driven approaches, developing fresh perspectives on excellence, quality, and societal engagement?

The publication aims at supporting institutions to navigate this transformation. Readers will find:

  • A methodology for planning curriculum innovation
  • A dive into the “Big Questions” — the key issues that arise when preparing for and managing curriculum change: Why? What? How? Who? When? And with Which Resources?
  • For each Big Question, readers will find a rich collection of insights and reflections, case studies, risk considerations, practical tips, and thought-provoking prompts.

These materials have been contributed by external experts, peers, and members of the Working Group.

We invite you to scroll, to read and view ad libitum, and to take away what is useful for your own situation.
