Join “Music in Socio-Cultural Turmoil”, organised by the Department of Musicology, Faculty of Music, University of Arts in Belgrade. The conference will take place from 29 to 31 October 2025 in Belgrade.
The conference topic explores the complex relationship between music and social change: How does music correspond with societal processes, anticipate major historical shifts, or act as a platform for political and cultural activism?? How do participants in the musical “ecosystem” respond to the pulse of the times? Beyond reflecting or depicting historical “shifts”, can music also anticipate major social turmoil? And have paradigm shifts in music history (almost) always corresponded with societal changes?
The topic is particularly relevant, having in mind the current turmoil in Serbia.
Keynote speakers include Georgina Born (University College London, UK), Paul Craenen (Royal Conservatoire in The Hague and ACPA, Leiden University, Netherlands), Juha Ojala (Sibelius Academy, University of the Arts Helsinki, Finland), and Dario Martinelli (Faculty of Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities, Kaunas University of Technology, Lithuania).
