The Creative Europe-funded project “Opera Out of Opera 2”, coordinated by the Conservatorio Santa Cecilia in Rome, has gone through busy and exciting times in the last year and is now ready for its final spurt with 5 itinerant performances around Europe starting in the Autumn.

The primary aim of the project is to attract new young audiences to the world of opera by redefining how opera is produced and consumed through the use of innovative audio-visual content both online and during live performances via a variety of channels including a smartphone app and social media.

The project partners are working hard to revitalise opera through transnational co-creation and digital innovation.

The performances’ co-creation process has just been finalised under the coordination of Conservatorio Santa Cecilia and Mozarteum Salzburg.

Moreover, the app for smartphones developed by the French partner WallMuse has been finalised and presented at SITEM 2024, a signature event for the audiovisual industry which took place at the Carrousel du Louvre in Paris on 3rd and 4th April.

The project was also on the front line during the Celebration of Europe Day in Italy on 9th May, with an Opera Out of Opera concert conducted by Maestro Michelangelo Galeati. The event took place in collaboration with the UN, FAO and Ordine di Malta.

One of the project’s key innovations is its stage set design, which breaks down traditional barriers between audiences and artists. By utilising interactive elements such as 360° cameras, the project will create a dynamic interaction between the public, the stage, and IT devices. This design enhances the immersive experience, making opera more engaging for the audience. Additionally, the app provides interactive content, allowing audiences to go deeper into the performances and better understand this art form.

Under the leadership of ESMAE Porto, the project created a tailored Audience Engagement Strategy (AES), which targets young audiences aged 18-25. This strategy includes social storytelling activities, opera trailers, and a call for ideas that involve young people in creating artworks which will be displayed in immersive rooms (deadline 21st July, more information available here).

Communication activities, coordinated by the AEC, play a paramount role in this project. OOO2 is very active on social media channels, in particular on Instagram, thanks to the tireless work of the appointed OOO2 Community Manager Zofia Lalak, who creates content, coordinates the projects’ Instagram Live Sessions, the storytelling content curated by ESMAE in Porto and the activity of the AEC’s recently appointed influencer Valentina Volpe Andreazza, who will be the ambassador of the project with young audiences on social media and beyond.
