METRIC (Modernizing European Higher Music Education through Improvisation) is a cooperative network of several leading European conservatoires and the AEC – Association of European Conservatories, with the aim to focus on the modernisation of higher music education through intensive international cooperation in the field of improvisation.

The METRIC network is organising a series of free online sessions about improvisation delivered by experts from the partner institutions. On Wednesday 12 October 2022, the first online session about collaborative musical interpretation was delivered by Anne La Berge from the Royal Conservatoire The Hague.

Anne La Berge’s passion for the extremes in both composed and improvised music has led her to storytelling and sound art as her sources of musical inspiration. Anne works regularly as an improvisation and live electronics coach worldwide in the context of residencies and private coaching.

Her presentation during the online session included a short overview of specific scores that she has used in classroom and workshop settings in middle and higher education with further discussion of how she has used strategies and materials for creating scores that use improvisation. The focus was the educational contribution that improvisational scores make on the overall development of the composer/performer/interpreter.

The METRIC Network will organise more online sessions about improvisation in 2023.
