PERCUSSION (TUNED PERCUSSION SPECIALIST)

Rate of Pay - Relevant Assistant Lecturer or Lecturer Salary Scale (Appendix 1)

The rate of remuneration may be adjusted from time to time in line with Government pay policy

Teaching c. Approximately 180 hours available per annum (tbc) to commence Sept 2026

BACKGROUND

The RIAM, as a national conservatoire for music in Ireland, is embarking on one of the most transformational phases in its 180-year history. THE IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL HAVE:

• significant experience teaching/coaching at pre-college, undergraduate and postgraduate level

• national/international profile as a performer and/or recording artist

• track record of incorporating reflective practices into their teaching/coaching

• undertaken practice-based research as part of their performance profile

RIAM is a national institution with a diverse student body. As such, this position will require availability on Saturdays and weekday afternoon/evenings to facilitate the teaching of Junior RIAM students. Applicants will be required to confirm this availability prior to interview.

APPLICATION AND INTERVIEW INFORMATION

At the interview, the candidate will be required to:

1. Teach or coach a short demonstration lesson with an RIAM student. (15 mins)

2. Give a short unaccompanied performance on your instrument. (5 mins)

3. Give a presentation on one of the following areas (10 mins):

- Creative approaches to teaching and learning.

- Student-centred learning.

- Incorporating research or performance into your teaching.

No power point presentation required, please provide handouts for the panel.

This will be followed by a conversation (approximately a further 15 minutes) with the interview panel.

Due to the nature of this role, the successful candidate will be required to complete mandatory health and safety training and Children First training, and to undergo Garda vetting in accordance with the National Vetting Bureau (Children and Vulnerable Persons) Acts 2012–2016. This position is deemed to involve relevant work with children and/or vulnerable persons under the Act. Appointment will be subject to satisfactory vetting and ongoing compliance with statutory and organisational safeguarding requirements.

TEACHING DUTIES

Teaching will be from junior to undergraduate/postgraduate level, to include a range of the following, as required:

• One-to-one teaching

• Small group or chamber coaching

• Participation and leading on third level coaching or ensemble projects as required

ANCILLARY DUTIES

• Use of Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), Moodle, to distribute asynchronous material required for teaching.

• Attendance at Faculty meetings and other relevant RIAM committees or working groups, the setting of syllabi and attendance at student audition and examination board meetings when required.
